Summary

The heat transfer coefficient of CO2 during evaporation inside horizontal tubes was investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop were a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and test section The test section was made of horizontal stainless steel tubes with the inner diameter of 4.57 and 7.75 mm. The length of the tube is 4.2 and 5 mm, respectively. The test tubes were provided with heat by a direct heating method. The experiments were conducted at saturation temperatures of -5 to 5°C, heat flux of 10 to 40 kW/m2 and mass flux of 200 to 500 kg/m2.s. The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer coefficients of CO2 were much more dependent than conventional refrigerants on the vapour quality, heat flux and saturation temperature.
