Summary

The development of superconducting conductors operating in liquid nitrogen has enabled superconducting cables to be considered for highly loaded power transmission lines (above 1 GVA). Besides a size gain (factor 3 to 5) beneficial to civil engineering, the energy savings, including cryogenics, are quite substantial. Several facilities have demonstrated the technical feasibility of such links. Present drawbacks remain the cost of the superconductor and the maintenance of refrigerators.
