Summary

TO INCREASE THE TRANSPORT CAPACITY OF TRANSMISSION LINES, THE VARIOUS ALTERNATIVES ARE DISCUSSED: OVERHEAD LINES, UNDERGROUND CABLES, GAS INSULATED CABLES, CRYOGENIC POWER CABLES, SUPERCONDUCTING CABLES. THE SUPERCONDUCTING CABLES ARE THE CHEAPEST FOR UNDERGROUND TRANSMISSION (LESS THAN HALF OF CONVENTIONAL CABLE COSTS) ; THEY CAN CARRY 5 TIMES THE POWER OF CONVENTIONAL CABLES, THEIR CHARACTERISTIC IMPEDANCE OF 30 OHMS IS MATCHED WITH MOST OF THE POWER SYSTEMS, THEY CAN CARRY OVERLOAD CURRENTS FOR MANY HOURS, THEIR CRITICAL LENGTH IS OF HUNDREDS OF KILOMETERS.
