Summary

This article outlines expanders for carbon dioxide refrigeration cycles. The expander is useful to recover a rather large throttling loss in the transcritical carbon dioxide cycle, and is effective to improve the cycle COP. Many patented expanders are applied by company engineers, which leads to the expectation that a practical expander applicable to the system will be developed soon. Basic research on such interesting phenomena in the expander, as the transcritical expansion and the transcritical leakage flow, are required to improve the expander efficiency.
