Summary

THE CONVENTIONAL WAY OF CALCULATING AIR EXPANSION OR ISENTROPIC COMPRESSION USES THE EQUATIONS OF THE ISENTROPIC CONVERSION OF IDEAL GASES. THE AUTHORS SHOW THAT THIS PRACTICE MAY RESULT IN ERRORS WHICH BECOME CONSIDERABLE FOR LOW TEMPERATURES AND HIGH PRESSURES, BUT THAT THESE EQUATIONS MAY ACCURATELY DESCRIBE THE ISENTROPIC CONVERSION OF AIR (AND REAL GASES) IF THE GAMMA EXPONENT IS REPLACED BY NEW EXPONENTS, CORRESPONDING TO EACH EQUATION. ANALYTICAL EXPRESSIONS ARE PRESENTED WITH THE EXPONENTS INTRODUCED AND THEIR VALUE IS CALCULATED IN THE CASE OF AIR FOR PRESSURES OF 100 TO 10,000 KILOPASCALS AND TEMPERATURES OF 223 TO 723 K.
