Experimental and numerical study on natural ventilation of atrium buildings.

Author(s) : GUNTERMANN K.

Summary

The major purpose of atrium buildings is a protection against outdoor climate, i.e. wind, rain, snow, and extreme temperatures in winter, increasing the comfort standard of the building environment. In Germany these glazed buildings usually do not have mechanical ventilation systems. Natural ventilation is provided by openings in the façade and the ceiling area of the atrium building. Performance, size and location of these openings primarily influence the ventilation effectiveness. Experimental investigations and numerical simulations provide a comprehensive information in the design phase.
