Simplified models for air stratification and thermal comfort in atria.

Author(s) : KOLSAKER K., FRYDENLUND F.

Summary

The paper presents the combination of a linear temperature stratification model and the use of ISO 7730 for calculating thermal comfort. The presented stratification model is integrated into a dynamic single-zone energy simulation program. Based on the stratified air temperature and calculation surface temperatures of an atrium, thermal comfort is calculated for five locations. Results are presented as hourly and accumulated curves, and hourly data are compared to measurements. In spite of the less accurate results, such tools are of great value in design and retrofit processes because of their wide availability and simple use. When used carefully, expensive redesign may be avoided at an early stage.
