Summary

A new compression-injection hybrid cycle for household refrigerators is proposed which takes into account the large temperature difference between the fresh food section and the freezer section. With the new cycle the loss of available energy caused by the excess temperature difference between the evaporator and the fresh section can be decreased. Simulation of the new cycle using R12 and the alternatives R152a, R134a, R22/R152a as refrigerants showed a significant increase in COP and volumetric refrigeration capacity compared to the simple vapour-compression cycle. An experimental refrigerator with the new cycle using R12 as refrigerant also consumed less energy.
