Summary

A new strategy of utilizing the industrial waste heat for the district heating system in northern China was introduced. To satisfy the new requirements, a new type of elementary unit for the generation and condensation process was proposed. A large temperature lift / drop 3-stage vertical generation and condensation elementary unit was built and tested on a test bench for vacuum heat and mass transfer processes. When design of the length of U-shape pipes of the condenser was not long enough, the vapor penetrated the U-shape pipes, and the pressure differences between neighboring two stages could hardly be established. After the U-shape pipes were lengthened, the energy balance of each stage was satisfied. The most suitable design solution flow rate for the elementary unit was found to be 0.20~0.22kg/s, in which the heat gains of cooling water of the three stages were equal, and the pressure difference between 1st stage and 2nd stage was equal to that between 2nd stage and 3rd stage.
