Summary

For the thermal comfort of occupants working in the perimeter zones of a building, besides air temperature, the mean radiant temperature (MRT) should be taken into consideration seriously. The MRT in the perimeter zone is closely related to solar radiation transmitting into the space that is determined by the factors, such as glazing materials, sun-protection system attached to the window, and the orientation of space, etc. In this study, experiments were conducted in two rooms with different performance of glazing system to demonstrate how the occupants’ thermal comfort was affected by the MRT and the potential of more energy conservation which was achieved by setting up the set-point of air-conditioning system without scarifying occupants’ thermal comfort. The experiment content includes two schemes: constant air temperature scheme and constant PPD scheme. In constant air temperature scheme, comparing the PPD and energy consumption of these two rooms demonstrated that not only the energy consumption of AC system but also the thermal comfort of occupants are affected by the performance of envelope. The experimental result of constant PPD scheme demonstrated that more energy saving can be achieved for a building with well-designed glazing system by rising up cooling set-point.
