Summary

Research activities in adaptive thermal comfort have recently increased dramatically due to the concerns of climate change and energy efficiency. Many research outcomes have been adapted in environmental design guides or standards. However, it is expected an in-depth research that links thermal comfort/occupant behaviour and energy management in buildings. Studies of thermal comfort leading to energy operation and management in buildings will contribute to energy efficiency because people’s interaction with the indoor environment plays a significant role in energy consumption in buildings. Mismatching and delaying occupants’ thermal comfort feedback to the building energy operation and management system is the major barrier to the performance of energy efficiency in buildings. This paper presents the research inspiration in applying digital technology to support interactions between occupants and environmental control systems in order to achieve energy efficiency in buildings. Occupant adaptive thermal comfort mechanism will be fully addressed in the operation and management system.
