Summary

The experiments were conducted with a 1/20 scaled down model for a solar chimney 8 m high above the roof and the section area of 4.93 m2 and 3.53 m2 with the south facing side made of glass panels. The inside surface temperatures of the solar chimney were obtained from a calculation. The air temperature and air velocities were measured for 33 different cases to obtain the air flow rate out of the upper outlet. It was found from the model experiment that the performance of natural ventilation would be affected by the inside temperature of the four walls within the solar chimney, the aspect ratio of the solar chimney section area. It is expected from the model experiment that the air flow rate by natural ventilation could provide about 5200-6800 m3/hour provided features were: a 4.93 m2 section area, a 3:1 aspect ratio and a 4:1-6:1 of the ratio inlet area to outlet area of the solar chimney.
