Summary

Photovoltaic modules are in most cases still considered to be technical devices that need to be adjusted to the building skin, despite the fact that a variety of products that convert them into building components have been developed lately. However, in case the solar module becomes part of the building skin, it gains multiple functions and requires aesthetical integration into the overall design concept. Facades are particularly suitable for experimenting with the architectural potential of photovoltaics. Moreover, facades, due to their visibility, also have a representational and educational role and can increase environmental awareness. A structured collection of high quality examples can heighten architects’ interest, provide them with knowledge of the architectural possibilities, and encourage them to perceive PV modules as building components. This paper presents international high quality façade integration projects, structured by a typology based on the field size and positioning of the solar components in relation to the overall design of the façade.
