Summary

The energy consumption of refrigeration system sis about 36TWh, and it is commonly assumed that 60 to 80% of the systems do not operate under optimal conditions (wrong settings or malfunctions). FDD (detection and diagnosis of failures) methods are automatic supervision process which can detect a deviation from a normal operation, and identify one or more ‘faults’ for which they have been programmed in a prior phase. After a general description of this technique, an example is presented about the detection of a lack of refrigerant, using evaporator outlet superheat and condenser outlet subcooling. Possible developments to diagnose other faults are finally discussed.
