Summary

The classification used in this file is based on the following criterion: one considers the room to be air conditioned and the refrigerant used characterizes the system. If the refrigerant reaches the terminal unit in the room, direct-expansion technology is used and this implies limited applications: this is individual air conditioning. Part of this article covers reversible thermodynamic systems suitable for the residential sector. Other systems are indirect-distribution central-air-conditioning systems using air where air is distributed and using water where water is used to cool terminal units, with these constituting the interfaces between the water and the air in the room.
