Summary

Heat transfer coefficients are obtained for condensation of saturated refrigerant vapours ( R-11, R-12, R-22, R-113, R-114, R-500, R-502) on a horizontal tube. The experiment was performed by the same apparatus with the copper tube and the same experimental procedure for all vapours in order to obtain the difference of heat transfer among the vapours. To obtain accurate data, the apparatus and instruments were thoroughly checked prior to a data run. The heat balance error of condenser was within 4-5% in all data runs. The surface temperature was measured by the thermocouples embedded in the tube and also determined by using the tube itself as a resistance thermometer simultaneously. The results indicate that for R-12, R-22, R-114, R-502, the obtained data are in good agreement with Nusselt equation and for R-11, R-113, R-500, the obtained data are about 10%, 10%, 5% below the equation respectively. Further, the effects of superheated vapour on heat transfer are obtained and found to be in good agreement with the theory developed by Sparrow and Eckert.
