Summary
A self-contained, recyclable helium 3 refrigerator suitable for use in zero-gravity has been developed. This refrigerator successfully flew on 5 September 1989, as part of an S-520 sounding rocket payload designed to measure the spectrum of the cosmic submillimetre background. The paper presents the cryogenic performance of the refrigerator during flight.
