Summary

Flow characteristics of ice slurry during cooling were investigated experimentally. An annular horizontal tube, having length of 4?m, inner tube diameter of 7.6?mm and outer tube diameter of 30?mm, was prepared as the experimental apparatus. Ice slurry and ethylene glycol flowed through inner and outer tubes, respectively, and the temperature of ethylene glycol was set from -4 to -6?°C. Variations of the pressure drop and flow rate of the ice slurry were measured and the solidification process of the ice slurry was observed. The flow and solidification characteristics of the ice slurry were found to depend on the flow rate and ice packing factor. For a low ice packing factor, the ice slurry was frozen in the tube under the low-flow-rate condition and the pressure drop increased with time, while the pressure drop did not increase even with a large temperature difference for a high ice packing factor.
