FREEZING OF SOILS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING.

Author(s) : AGUIRRE-PUENTE J.

Summary

A DISCUSSION ON THE PHYSICS OF SOIL FREEZING AND THE THERMODYNAMICS OF INTERFACES IS FOLLOWED BY A STUDY OF PROBLEMS APPEARING IN CIVIL ENGINEERING IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE SAFETY AND RELIABILITY OF STRUCTURES BUILT IN AREAS WHERE TEMPERATURES LOWER THAN 273 K (0 DEG C) MAY BE OBSERVED OR IMPOSED. THE PROTECTION OF ROADS IN WINTER IS USED AS A BASIS OF THE REPORT OF OTHER TECHNOLOGICAL PROBLEMS: TRANSPORT OF ENERGY THROUGH PERMAFROST, UNDERGROUND CRYOSTORAGE, USE OF ARTIFICIAL FREEZING IN THE BUILDING OF STRUCTURES IN LOOSE GROUND. THE CRITICAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE LONG-TERM PREDICTION OF SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION AND THE REQUIREMENT OF FURTHERING THE BASIC RESEARCH AS FOR CRYOGENIC SUCTION AND SWELLING ARE SHOWN.
