THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DECIDUOUS FRUIT INDUSTRY AT THE CAPE AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY LED TO A DEMAND FOR RESEARCH AND EXTENSION SERVICES. THE FIRST AREA WHERE CRITICAL PROBLEMS WERE ENCOUNTERED WAS THAT OF PRECOOLING AND REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT OF FRUIT AND OTHER PERISHABLES. THIS LED IN 1925 TO THE ESTABLISHMENTOF THE LOW TEMPERATURE RESEARCH LABORATORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE IN CAPE TOWN.
