Summary

THE LOCAL HEAT EXCHANGE COEFFICIENT IS DETERMINED FROM A LOCAL SURFACE FLOW APPLIED TO THE EXTERNAL WALL OF THE FLOWMETER. THIS DETERMINATION IS MADE UNDER STEADY STATE CONDITIONS. THE LENGTHWISE DISTRIBUTION OF THE HEAT EXCHANGE COEFFICIENT IN FORCED CONVECTION IN A CYLINDRICAL DUCT OBTAINED WITH THIS PROCEDURE IS COMPARED TO THAT OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT EXPRESSIONS OF THE NUSSELT NUMBER. THE REPRODUCIBILITY AND SENSITIVITY OF THIS METHOD ARE ANALYSED FROM A TWO-PHASE FLOW OF DROPLETS SUSPENDED IN AIR. THIS DETERIORATION OF FLUID CONDUCTIVITY ALTERS HEAT TRANSFER WHICH IS SHOWN BY THE FLOWMETER. THIS UNIT CAN DETECT A CHANGE IN HEAT TRANSFER OF ABOUT 10%. TEMPERATURE DEVIATIONS OF ABOUT 0.5 DEG IN THE TEMPERATURE RECORDED BY THE THERMOCOUPLE LOCATED AT 1 CM FROM THE HEATING RESISTANCE RESULTS IN A RELATIVE ERROR IN THE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT OF ABOUT 5%.
