Summary

TO COPE WITH CERTAIN EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE MEDIUMS, INDUSTRY IS SOMETIMES BROUGHT TO CHOOSE COSTLY MATERIALS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF HEAT EXCHANGERS. THESE MATERIALS ARE USED FOR ALL THE PARTS OF THE EXCHANGER IN CONTACT WITH THESE MEDIUMS. FOR SOME OF THESE APPLICATIONS, THE AUTHORS PROPOSE TO USE AN ALTERNATIVE MATERIAL, POLYVINYLIDENEFLUORIDE (PVDF), A THERMOPLASTIC OF THE SAME CHEMICAL FAMILY AS POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE (PTFE). TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE POOR THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF PVDF, THE AUTHORS USE TUBES WITH SMALL DIAMETERS AND THIN WALLS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TUBE BUNDLE. IT HAS BEEN OPERATING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. AS A CONCLUSION, THE AUTHORS CONSIDER THAT HEAT EXCHANGERS OF PVDF ARE A NEW TECHNICAL SOLUTION TO CERTAIN CORROSION PROBLEMS.
