Summary

A 0D-1D transient and computationally inexpensive model is used to simulate the thermal behavior of a server that is placed in an exterior environment. This model consists of N-interconnected boxes that are modeled with a transient heat equation, considering the possible mass flow between the boxes, convection heat transfer, and solar radiation for the exterior box. The external conditions such as solar radiation and ambient temperature over time are obtained from a historical database or real-time data. In the studied case a statistically typical year in the city of Barcelona is used. The model provides temperature and heat exchange information that helps have a better insight into the thermal behavior of the system, and it is a useful tool for the design and optimization of servers.
