Summary

THE AUTHORS HAVE CONSTRUCTED HELIUM 4 CRYOSTATS WHICH ACCEPT SAMPLES UP TO 38 MM DIAMETER AND CAN BE INSERTED INTO STORAGE DEWARS HAVING LARGE DIAMETER NECKS. THESE CRYO-STATS ARE CONSTRUCTED FROM SIMPLE AND INEXPENSIVE PARTS, ALLOW TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED OPERATION FROM 4.2 TO 300 K, PROVIDE FOR RAPID THERMAL CYCLING, AND HAVE OF LOAD/LOCK SYSTEM TO PREVENT EXPOSURE OF THE SAMPLES TO AIR OR WATER AND TO PROTECT LAB OCCUPANTS FROM TOXIC MATERIALS. ALTHOUGH THE CRYOSTAT IS DESIGNED FORANALYSIS OF SUPERCONDUCTING DEVICES, IT IS USEFUL WHENEVER SAMPLES OF SEVERAL CUBIC INCH VOLUME NEED TO BE ANALYZED OVER A WIDE CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURE RANGE WITH THERMAL STABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL.
