Summary

DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF AN ALL METAL LIQUID HELIUM DEWAR WITH VAPOUR COOLED SHIELDS, WHICH CAN HOLD 6 LITRES OF LIQUID HELIUM FOR MORE THAN 40 HOURS, WHICH IS VERY CLOSE TO THE EVAPORATION RATE OF COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE DEWARS. THE AVERAGE EVAPORATION RATE IN THE STEADY STATE IS ABOUT 150 CC PER HOUR. EXCEPT FOR THE LIQUID HELIUM CHAMBER, WHICH IS MADE FROM THIN WALL STAINLESS STEEL PIPE, ALL OTHER MATERIALS, INCLUDING THE SUPERINSULATION, ARE INDIGENOUS. THIS CRYOSTAT WILL HOUSE AN 8-TESLA SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET AND WILL BE USED FOR STUDYING THE MAGNETIC AND TRANSPORT PROPERTIES OF SUPERCONDUCTORS. J. V.
