Summary

Normal Evaporation Rate and Holding Time of cryogenic horizontal storage tanks is subject of interest in regard to tank operation. Theoretical and experimental investigation was done on an industrial size container. Mathematical model presuming thermal stratification of liquid was created. The experiments were done with liquid nitrogen for three different levels of filling. The heat leak was measured by the method developed by the authors. The results were compared to the calculated forecast. Additional result of this experiment was the total holding time during the pressure increase from atmospheric pressure to the set pressure of the relief valve. Mathematical model of heat leak to the horizontal tank and dynamics of pressurization was developed and validated by measurement on a 40ft ISO container with vacuum multilayer insulation. Major parameter of the model is the ratio of warm and cold liquid. . The intention is to apply this model for prediction of the behavior of large cryogenic tanks, where experimental analysis is not possible because of size and non-availability for experiments during operation. Results of the analysis are presented in this paper, which is available as guidelines for operators, now.
