HVAC system design employing certified air-to-air energy recovery equipment.

Summary

Air-to-air heat and moisture exchangers have been available for HVAC ventilation design for many years. Despite energy cost shocks and environmental concerns, they have yet to gain full acceptance in HVAC design. This is perhaps due to : the added complexity of incorporating energy exchangers in a good design, and a lack of guaranteed performance factors. In the paper these knowledge deficiencies are discussed in detail by presenting: all the air-to-air exchanger performance factors for heat exchangers and heat and moisture exchangers; presenting a simple step-by-step HVAC design procedure; illustrating this design methodology in a simple example and demonstrating the importance of certified equipment.
