Summary

The Queensland Cairns Government Office Building, the William McCormack Place was designed to be an ABGR 4-Star building. In operation it has achieved a certified ABGR rating of 5 Stars. The air conditioning installed in William McCormack Place is designed for a tropical location wherein the tasks for treating the room and ventilation loads are separated, i.e. the humid outside air is conditioned by an outside air pre-conditioning system thereby allowing the distributed space air handling units to condition the internal loads that are primarily sensible heat. The existing pre-conditioner comprises a rotary enthalpy wheel heat-exchanger and a 152 kW chilled water cooling coil. This study is intended to review the outside air pre-conditioner and show that an alternative system can provide similar outside air supply conditions with a substantially reduced 74 kW chilled water cooling coil.
