Summary

Synthesis of the meetings held on 24 May 1996 in Milan on the management of air quality in buildings. The first meeting dealt with standards and technical-scientific aspects; the other presented practical implementations. The main following points are reviewed in the article: (i) present Italian standards: their insufficiency; major air pollutants; proposals for the improvement of standards; (ii) critical assessment on the design and management of air conditioning plants; relationship between air conditioning, environment in a broad sense and energy; air-conditioned plants as sources of contamination; (iii) air quality and its effects on health and comfort; pollution by radon; sick building syndrome; chemical sensitivity syndrome; (iv) monitoring of air quality; (v) inspection and disinfection of air conditioning plants; major emphasis on hygiene in filters and humidification systems; (vi) control of ventilation in relation with air quality; selection of building materials; limitation of pollutant content; prohibition of smoking in air-conditioned rooms; equilibrium between air change rate and operating costs; (vii) technical-functional aspects of the control of air quality level; use of CO2 sensors and gas mix sensors; problems of calibration.
