Summary

Analytical expressions are obtained for the film thickness, liquid boundary layer width, and vapour and liquid velocities for boiling of both a saturated and subcooled liquid. A stability analysis of the vapour film flow is performed. It is shown that the mechanism of instability and the dispersion equation for perturbations are the same for both cases. The instability is caused by interaction of kinematic waves in the vapour film with surface waves on the film boundary. On the basis of the stability analysis, new criteria of the change of boiling regimes are deduced. These criteria in many respects are consistent with the available experimental data.
