Integration of absorption chillers into biomass-fired district heating networks for space cooling applications: technical evaluation for the case of southern Catalonia.

Summary

Recently, small capacity absorption chillers (ABCs) with a new set of technical features suitable for coupling to District Heating (DH) networks have been emerging in the market. Programs for biomass-fired DH networks are currently under development in the Southern Catalonia area of Spain. The integration of ABCs to DH networks improve their market competitiveness by providing sustainable cooling in summer season. The technical feasibility of coupling the ABCs with the DH networks to deliver cooling is demonstrated through a case study. The case study shows that a proposed NH3/LiNO3 single-effect absorption chiller prototype can achieve about 45.1 % reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions. At the same time, an electrical COP of around 7.4 is achieved resulting in considerable economic and environmental benefits compared to conventional vapor compression systems.
