Summary
An expander with work recovery improves the COP of transcritical CO2 refrigeration cycles. If one chooses a three-stage expander, it is advantageous to introduce a vapour-liquid separator between the second and third stage of refrigeration. The separated vapour is expanded in the third stage of the expander, whereas the liquid flows at a medium pressure level to the cooling stations, where it is throttled by a thermostatic or electronic expansion valve.
