Summary

THE AUTHORS HAVE INVESTIGATED THE NOTCH TOUGHNESS OF ALUMINIUM-MAGNESIUM-MANGANESE ALLOY IN THE TEMPERATURE RANGE DOWN TO 4 K IN ORDER TO SATISFY ITS USE AS A CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL IN CRYOGENIC PRESSURE VESSELS. THE TESTS CARRIED OUT WERE NOTCHED-BAR IMPACT TESTS, DETERMINATION OF NOTCH TENSILE/PROOF STRESS RATIO, AND FRACTURE-MECHANICAL TESTS. THE CONCLUSION REACHED WAS THAT THE MATERIAL IS ADEQUATE FOR STATICALLY STRESSED COMPONENTS, BUT FURTHER FRACTURE-MECHANICAL TESTS WILL BE MADE. FIGURES ARE GIVEN. D.W.H.
