THEAUTHOR DISCUSSES TESTS TO DETERMINE THE PRESENCE OF LEGIONAIRES' DISEASE BACTERIA IN COOLING TOWERS. 3 COOLING TOWERS WERE TESTED, THEY WERE: ONE GALVANIZED CLOSED CIRCUIT UNIT, ABOUT 100 TONS, ONE WOODEN OPEN COOLING TOWER, ABOUT 2,500TONS, AND ONE GALVANIZED OPEN COOLING TOWER, ABOUT 500 TON CAPACITY. TEST RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL. SOME PROCEDURES ARE SUGGESTED FOR MINIMISING RISK ; THESE INCLUDE CLEANLINESS AND THE USE OF CHEMICALS FOR WHICH A PROGRAMME IS GIVEN. E.W.S.
