STATES THAT FIGURES FROM THE COMMUNICABLE DISEASES SURVEILLANCE CENTRE SUGGEST THAT 70% OF HOSPITAL HOT AND COLD WATER SYSTEMS AND 42% OF HOSPITAL COOLING TOWERS ARE CONTAMINATED WITH LEGIONELLA PNEUMOPHILA. DESCRIBES THE CONDITIONSWHICH FAVOUR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF THE BACTERIA IN WATER. STATES THAT A TOTAL MANAGEMENT HYGIENE PROGRAMME MUST COMBINE PROFESSIONAL WATER TREATMENT PROGRAMMES IN WHICH MAINTENANCE ENGINEERS CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE, WITH REGULAR AND THOROUGH CLEANING OF THE SYSTEMS.
