Liquid refrigerant injection in scroll compressors operating at high compression ratios.

Summary

Scroll compressors are seeing applications in low and medium temperature refrigeration systems as well as heat pumps. Operating at elevated compression ratios associated with these conditions can result in excessive discharge temperatures in the single-stage scroll compressor. Injection of liquid refrigerant is an effective and practical method of supplying cooling. A thermodynamic analysis is paired with laboratory testing to determine possible effects of liquid injection on compressor capacity, efficiency, and internal temperature.
