Summary
Using high-critical-temperature superconductors to transport AC offers the advantage of less losses than traditional conductors and of not requiring liquid nitrogen, contrary to low-critical-temperature superconductors. The drawbacks are their high cost and the relatively low level of current density achieved. Because of the static converter machine combination in electrical engineering systems, the currents are often non-sinusoidal. This explains why this study concerns losses in a superconductor powered by a sinusoidal and then by a non-sinusoidal current from a gradient. In many cases, the evaluation and measurement of the losses are important. Their theoretical prediction is based on the Bean model and the study of field losses. Loss measurement may be performed either thanks to calorimetric measurements or to electrical measurements, as is the case in this study.
