Summary

Y0.9Gd0.1Fe2(D1-yHy)4.2 compounds crystallize in a monoclinic structure with a remaining contribution of C15 cubic structure. The cell volumes are larger than for non-substituted YFe2(D1-yHy)4.2 compounds and increase upon H for D substitution. The compounds with y = 0 and 0.5 display a sharp magnetic transition, whose temperature increases from 102 to 135 K upon H substitution. Above this transition the magnetization curves display a metamagnetic behaviour. In the hydride (y = 1) three transitions are observed at 155, 182 and 270 K, showing a different magnetic behaviour. The magnetic entropy variation (?SM) for y = 0 and 0.5 shows a single peak around the transition temperature whereas three peaks are observed for the hydride, corresponding to the three magnetic transitions. The possibility to observe a significant magnetic entropy variation near room temperature opens new perspectives in this system.
