Summary

For the development of innovative energy-saving heat-pump concepts for the production of cold, it is of utmost importance to know the size of the market and the possible energy-saving potential already at an early stage. The use of cold in the temperature range -110 to 15 °C is assessed as 28 PJ per year. The primary energy use associated with this production of cold amounts to 27 PJ per year. The energy-saving potential of the new cooling machines investigated amounts to 4.4 PJ for a waste-heat driven thermochemical cooling machine and 1.5-2.7 PJ for a thermoacoustic cooling machine (gas-fired and waste-heat driven respectively). The economic prospects for these refrigeration machines look very good due to the fact that the reduced energy consumption leads to a strong reduction in operation costs.
