Summary

TWO ALTERNATE MECHANICAL PUMP CONCEPTS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED FOR THE TRANSFER OF SUPERFLUID HELIUM IN SPACE. BOTH PUMPS PROVIDE FLOW AT SUFFICIENT HEAD AND HAVE OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS SUITABLE FOR THE SPACE INFRARED TELESCOPE FACILITY REFILL MISSION. THE USE OF GAS BEARINGS REQUIRES TRANSFER OF NORMAL HELIUM SO THAT THE GAS PRESSURE WITHIN THE PUMP CASING IS HIGH ENOUGH TO OPERATE THE BEARINGS. THE MAJOR ISSUES FOR EACH PUMP DESIGN ARE CAVITATION PERFORMANCE AND BEARING DEVELOPMENT.
