Summary

THE ARGUMENT PUT FORWARD APPLIES EQUALLY TO REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS OTHER THAN SUPERMARKETS PROVIDING THEY OPERATE NORMALLY WITH FAIRLY HIGH CONDENSING TEMPERATURES. THE CASE TAKEN IS FOR AIR-COOLED CONDENSERS IN THE MIDDLE EAST. IF A SMALL REFRIGERATION SYSTEM IS ADDED TO SUBCOOL THE MAIN SYSTEM CONDENSATE FLOW TO ABOUT 283 K (10 DEG C) WHILE EVAPORATING AT A MUCH HIGHER TEMPERATURE THAN THE MAIN PLANT, SUBSTANTIAL POWER SAVINGS ARE POSSIBLE. RETROFITTING OF SUCH A SYSTEM IS RELATIVELY SIMPLE, AS THE EXISTING CONDENSER CAN ACCOMODATE THE SUBCOOLING SYSTEM CONDENSING DUTY AND STILL BE OVERSIZED DUE TO THE INCREASE IN EFFICIENCY OF THE MAIN PLANT.
