Modelling of surplus heat exploitation in a dairy.
Number: pap. n. 284
Author(s) : LIND A., ROSENBERG E., NORDTVEDT S. R.
Summary
The submitted paper presents results from the development of a generic model for energy savings in food industries. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the model, a case study has been performed for a Norwegian dairy. TRNSYS (TRaNsient Systems Simulation program) was used as the modelling tool. The case study is currently limited to the existing cheese production line. Different solutions for energy savings by the use of water recovery tanks and high temperature heat pumps are considered in the paper. Currently, 26 different simulation models have been made for different cases relevant for the cheese production line at the dairy, of which the 10 most promising designs are described. Preliminary results indicate that the most promising design solution gives an electricity reduction of around 31% and a thermal energy reduction of around 15% compared to the base-case scenario. This solution involves retrofitting with only minor piping modifications and stream changes in a few heat exchangers.
