Summary

AN EXPLANATION OF THE NEGATIVE THERMAL EXPANSION OF SOLID METHANE IS PROPOSED DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF YAMAMOTO-KATAOKA. IT ASSUMED COMPETITION OF TWO FACTORS TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CRYSTAL VOLUME VARIATION WITH TEMPERATURE. THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE FREE ENERGY DUE TO THE PROCESS OF POPULATING OF TUNNEL STATES OF AN ORDERED SUBLATTICE WITH RISING TEMPERATURE FAVOURS LATTICE CONTRACTION. THE HEIGHT OF THE BARRIER SEPARATING EQUIVALENT ORIENTATIONAL MINIMA INCREASES, WHILE THE TUNNELING SPLITTING MAGNITUDE DECREASES AND THE FREE ENERGY DECREASES. THE THEORETICAL DATA ARE FOUND TO AGREE QUANTITATIVELY WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA.
