Summary

Increasing population density in cities and changes in consumption patterns force public authorities and stakeholders to review their approach for freight logistics in large urban centers. The challenges are to maintain the quality of their services (including timely deliveries of fresh foodstuff) while limiting the environmental impact of freight transport. At the heart of this problem, temperature controlled transportation brings together complex health and environmental issues. Among the suggested solutions for a sustainable city, night deliveries will offer both grouped deliveries with larger trucks or semi-trailers and the benefits of the easiest access to the city center during night-time periods when congestion is limited. the only drawback is to deliver silently without noise disturbance. Paradoxically, thanks to nigh operation, refrigerated truck and semi-trailers may well contribute in the future to the reducing atmospheric pollution that transport activities collectively generate.
