“Night wind” energy storage concept develops into a product: a cold store time of use (ToU) controller.

Summary
The refrigeration system of a cold store typically does not run continuously, but only for a certain number of hours per day. This provides a freedom to select the hours in which the refrigeration system is running. We also see that in current electricity markets, the electricity is priced on an hourly basis. By selecting the Time of Use (ToU) of the cold store refrigeration system, we can therefore influence electricity costs, and aim for minimum costs within set temperature boundaries. The ESTORE project has developed a controller for Cold Stores that provides this electricity cost benefit to the cold store owner. Estimates for the cost reduction are given in this article, provided the energy contract of the cold store is based on the day ahead prices of one of the electricity spot markets of France, Germany/Austria, Belgium or the UK.
