Summary

THE AUTHORS INITIATED THE CRYOPRESERVATION OF AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD FOR TRANSFUSION IN ELECTIVE CARDIAC SURGERY STARTING IN 1981. THE STUDY INCLUDED 76 SURGICAL CASES IN WHICH FROZEN ALLOGENEIC AND/OR AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD WAS USED. OUT OF 76 SURGICAL CASES, THERE WERE 27 IN WHICH AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD ONLY (GROUP I) WAS USED ; 11 CASES WITH AUTOLOGOUS AND ALLOGENEIC FROZEN BLOOD (GROUP II) ; 13 CASES WITH AUTOLOGOUS AND ALLOGENEIC FROZEN PLUS ALLOGENEIC NON-FROZEN BLOOD (GROUP III) ; AND 25 CASES WITH ALLOGENEIC FROZEN PLUS ALLOGENEIC NON-FROZEN BLOOD (GROUP IV). NO HEPATITIS DEVELOPED IN GROUPS I AND II, BUT THERE WAS POSITIVE HEPATITIS IN GROUPS III (7.6%) AND IV (8.0%).
