Summary

The desiccant coated heat exchanger (DCHE), a type of solid desiccant dehumidification system, is a promising alternate technology for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications. It is energy efficient as both the sensible and latent loads can be handled simultaneously. An experimental setup for testing the performance of DCHE during dehumidification and regeneration is developed. A plain fin tube heat exchanger coated with silica gel is fabricated for the study. The dynamic variation of temperature and specific humidity of air is experimentally measured for different cold water flow rates. Furthermore, a novel transient one-dimensional heat and mass transfer model predicting the heat and mass transfer process of a plain fin tube-based DCHE is presented in this paper. The effect of different operating parameters on the performance of DCHE is studied numerically. The optimum operating parameters for the efficient working of DCHE are determined for hot and humid climatic conditions.
