Oil concentration measurement at discharge line of refrigerant compressor.

Summary

Real-time measurement of oil amount flowing out from a compressor with refrigerant gas is required to examine the reliability of the compressor and the transient oil behaviour in the refrigeration cycle. In the study, an optical method to measure the oil concentration at the compressor discharge line is investigated experimentally. A photo-sensor unit consisting of a LED and a photodiode detects the intensity of light transmitted through a glass tube in which the compressor discharge refrigerant mixed with oil flows. By experiment, it is found that the flow pattern in the compressor discharge line is the annular flow of oil film. The photo-sensor output varies depending on the oil flow rate rather than on the oil concentration in the refrigerant flow. The sensor output is correlated to the oil flow rate though the correlation is slightly influenced by the flow direction and the light axis direction.
