Summary

A DETAILED THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION IS CARRIED OUT ON THE FREQUENCY AND TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCES OF THE INTRINSIC DIELECTRIC LOSSES IN CRYSTALS OF DIFFERENT SYMMETRY. THE CASE IS CONSIDERED WHEN THE LOSSES ARE DUE TO THE INTERACTION BETWEEN ACOUSTIC PHONONS AND A VARYING ELECTRIC FIELD. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE DETAILS OF THE LOSS BEHAVIOUR ARE SENSITIVE TO THE CRYSTAL POINT GROUP. TYPICAL VARIANTS OF RANDOM DEGENERACY ARE CONSIDERED, IE THOSE WHICH MAY BE REALIZED WITH A FINITE PROBABILITY. THE CAUSES OF THE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THESE RESULTS AND THOSE OF COOMBS AND COWLEY ARE DISCUSSED.
