Summary

MEASUREMENTS ON THE FLOW OF HELIUM II IN CAPILLARY TUBES ARE REPORTED. THE EMPHASIS IN THE WORK IS ON FLOW STATES, IN WHICH MASS AND ENTROPY FLOW IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS. THE RESULTS ARE INTERPRETED IN TERMS OF A UNIFORM ISOTROPIC VORTEX TANGLE OF DENSITY. THE SHARP DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE FLOW STATES OF PURE SUPERFLUID FLOW AND OF THERMAL COUNTERFLOW, WHICH HAS RECENTLY BEEN SUGGESTED IN THE LITERATURE, CAN THEREFORE OBVIOUSLY NOT BE MADE.
